Xylenes is a solvent used in the production of chemicals, agricultural sprays, adhesives, and coatings, as an ingredient in aviation fuel and gasoline, and as a feedstock in the production of various polymers such as phthalic anhydride, isophthalic acid, terephthalic acid, and dimethyl terephthalate. Thinners, solvents in paints, inks, rubbers, gums, resins, and lacquers, paint removers, and polyester fibers are all applications for xylenes. A lesser percentage of the mixed xylenes generated each year is added to gasoline to boost octane ratings.
